DEVELOPER NEWS: netSHIELD Simplifies Real-time Ethernet Connectivity for STMicroelectronics STM 32 MCU Users

Hilscher just made it much easier to build Real-time Ethernet (RTE) connectivity into projects using the STM 32 microcontroller (MCU) from
STMicroelectronics (STM).

A “shield” expansion module called netSHIELD has been introduced for Arduino UNO format STM32 NUCLEO 64 and 144 development boards. The "shield" supports easy Industrial Ethernet connectivity for all popular RTE protocols, using the firmware-flexible approach of Hilscher's netX family of ASICs.

An embedded software expansion for ST’s STM32Cube software library is available from Hilscher to ensure seamless integration of industrial communication in the host controller.

STM32 microcontrollers are the leading host processers for Hilscher’s netX ASICs, when netX is used as the communications co-processor. Says CEO Phil Marshall: “We are seeing strong growth in the use of netX as a companion chip to the STM32 MCU. This new netSHIELD evaluation module simplifies integration. Now, developers can easily connect their STM32 MCU projects to real-time industrial network protocols.” Supported protocols include: PROFINET® IRT and RT devices, EtherCAT® Slave, Ethernet/IP™ Adapter, POWERLINK Controlled Node, Sercos® III Slave, and Modbus® /TCP Client/Server.
